Greyhound Adoption Program Australia supports every greyhound’s full life cycle and adoption into a forever home. It is the greyhound racing industry’s commitment to every greyhound’s transition from racing into their forever home.
Consider adopting a greyhound if you are looking for a friendly, affectionate and low maintenance pet.
We also facilitate a full foster program involving desexing, microchipping, temperament testing, C5 vaccination and teeth clean before being introduced into your home.
Every state Greyhound Adoption Program carefully matches greyhounds to their potential forever home. We look at your expectations, lifestyle and any additional requirements needed to support the adoption process.
Jordan and Monty
When a greyhound named Monty was adopted into a Ballarat home in 2009, it changed the lives of his new owners, particularly Jordan, who was just nine years old at the time.
“Jordan was a boy who always lacked self confidence,” Jordan’s mum Cassie Sanders said. “When we adopted Monty it changed him completely.”
“Here was this small, shy boy who instantly grew in confidence because he had this big, gentle dog as a pet. He’d walk Monty down the street standing nice and tall, with his shoulders back. He was so proud. Monty really brought Jordan out of his shell.”
Sadly, Monty passed away recently at age 11, after six wonderful years living with the Sanders family.
While still sad at the loss of Monty, the Sanders household recently opened its doors to a new greyhound from the Greyhound Adoption Program, named Koda.
“Koda has such a bubbly personality. We miss Monty deeply but Koda has fitted so well into our family. She is always so happy. She reminds me of Marilyn from (Channel Seven’s) Home And Away,” Cassie laughed.
Are you ready to adopt?
Greyhounds are incredibly gentle pets that require very little upkeep for their wellbeing. You can provide a safe new home for a loving animal and support a worthwhile cause.
Being a highly sociable companion means greyhounds really benefit from continued socialisation throughout their life, whether that be with other humans or different dog breeds.
Consider adopting a greyhound if you have time to devote to the initial transition phase, have access to a secure yard with high fences, a stable routine, understanding of the breeds requirements, and the financial stability to cover the ongoing costs of owning a pet.
Greyhounds require at least 20 minutes of walking per day as well as toys and mental stimulation amongst a stable and enriching environment. To maintain their health they will require a quality diet, drinking water, and appropriate vet care. These are very sensitive animals and need their tenderness to be supported by a loving owner.
The Application Process
The first step is to contact your state’s office for an opportunity to discuss all the requirements needed to adopt a new greyhound pet.
Once you have been provided further information, you can complete an application form. That application will be processed by your state’s office, they will then liaise with you to discuss your eligibility as a new adoptee.
Once a representative determines your ability to care for your new greyhound pet, you will be introduced to a few foster pets. This will give you an opportunity to select the greyhound that you feel is suited to you the most.
You will be able to liaise with your state’s office during the initial adoption phase to ensure that you are equipped with all the resources to understand the best way to manage this integral transition phase for your new pet.
